What Does GAD Feel Like?
Generalised Anxiety Disorder doesn’t always look the way people expect. It often shows up quietly.
You might feel restless for no clear reason. Your chest might feel tight. You might lie awake at night running through endless “what ifs.” You might worry about things that never used to bother you.
Anxiety can also make you doubt yourself, avoid plans, or feel like you’re failing—even when you’re doing your best.
It’s not weakness. It’s your nervous system trying to protect you—but getting stuck in overdrive.
Therapy That Centres on You
At Eleos Counselling, we don’t offer one-size-fits-all advice. We take time to get to know you—your experiences, your worries, your hopes.
You’ll be met with warmth, not judgment. You don’t need to have all the words or answers.
Our counselling room near Steyning is a calm, confidential space. We’ll go at your pace and follow what feels right for you.
The Strength in Reaching Out
You might be used to holding everything in. Maybe you’re the one others turn to. Or maybe you’ve felt like asking for help means you’re not coping.
But the truth is, choosing therapy is a sign of strength—not failure. It’s saying: “I matter enough to want things to feel better.”
And they can.
How We Help With Anxiety
Anxiety is complex, and therapy gives you the space to explore it properly. Together, we’ll look at:
-
How anxiety shows up for you
-
What thoughts, patterns, or past experiences may be driving it
-
How to respond to anxious feelings in kinder, more helpful ways
Some clients want to understand themselves more deeply. Others want help managing panic, sleep, or worry. Whatever your goals, we’ll support you step by step.

Testimony from Daniel, 28
Before I started therapy, I felt stuck in a cycle I couldn’t break. I’d have good days, but more often than not, I felt anxious, low, and completely disconnected—from friends, from my job, even from myself. I kept telling myself I should be able to “get on with it,” but deep down I knew I needed help.
Starting counselling was one of the hardest and bravest decisions I’ve ever made. I was nervous at first—worried about what I might say, or if I’d be judged. But my therapist made me feel safe and understood from the very beginning. There was no pressure to be anyone other than who I was in that moment.
Through our work together, I began to see patterns—ways I’d learned to cope that weren’t really helping me. Slowly, I started challenging the voice in my head that said I wasn’t good enough. I found new ways to handle stress, set boundaries, and be kinder to myself.
Now, I feel more grounded. I’m not saying life’s perfect—it’s not. But I don’t feel lost anymore. I’ve got more confidence in who I am, and I feel stronger in facing whatever comes next. I’m genuinely grateful I gave myself this chance.
