What Is Anxiety and How Does It Affect You?

Anxiety is more than occasional worry or stress—it’s an ongoing state that can disrupt your daily life, relationships, and sense of self. It might manifest as overthinking, avoiding certain situations, or physical sensations like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or tension. It can make even ordinary moments feel daunting, leaving you drained and uncertain about how to move forward.

At Eleos Counselling, we understand that anxiety is complex and deeply personal. It often stems from life experiences, fears, or patterns that have developed over time. By exploring these roots together, we can help you understand your anxiety in a new way, offering tools and strategies to manage it more effectively.

A Therapeutic Approach Centred on You

At Eleos Counselling, we believe that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every individual’s experience with anxiety is unique, and so are the solutions that bring relief. That’s why our approach is tailored specifically to your needs, goals, and circumstances.

Through our sessions, we’ll create a space where you feel comfortable sharing your experiences, no matter how overwhelming or difficult they may seem. We’ll take the time to understand what anxiety looks like for you, and we’ll work together to develop strategies that help you manage your feelings, build resilience, and rediscover your sense of control.

Empowering Care: Our focus is on equipping you with the tools and confidence to manage anxiety in your daily life, empowering you to move forward with greater ease.

Therapy can bring about significant, positive changes in how you experience and manage anxiety. Some of the benefits include:

    • Learning techniques to calm your mind and body during moments of stress.
    • Feeling more confident in your ability to navigate challenges and uncertainty.
    • Experiencing relief from the physical and emotional strain that anxiety creates.
    • Improving relationships by reducing anxiety’s impact on communication and connection.

“I Thought I Was Going to Die”: My Journey Through Anxiety and Weed

I first started smoking weed during my A-levels. It felt like a lifeline — something to take the edge off the stress and help me keep going. It made me feel relaxed, even good, like I could breathe again.

But when I got to uni, things changed. I was smoking more — often alone. I didn’t think much of it until one day, in the middle of a lecture, I had a full-blown panic attack. My chest tightened, my heart raced, and I genuinely thought I was dying.

That moment scared me. I knew something had to change, but it wasn’t easy. I still craved that sense of escape. My mum suggested I speak to a counsellor — and that’s when I met Tony.

In therapy, we began to untangle everything. I came to see that weed wasn’t just helping me chill out — it had become a way to disconnect from everything I was feeling. I’d retreat into this world that felt comforting, but it was actually isolating and dark.

Talking with Tony helped me face what I’d been running from. Bit by bit, the anxiety became something I could understand rather than fear. I’m so glad I reached out for help — it changed everything.
