What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but when it becomes persistent or difficult to control, it can take a toll on your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. It often manifests in different ways, such as:

  • Constant worry or fear that disrupts your thoughts.
  • Feeling on edge, restless, or unable to relax.
  • Physical symptoms like muscle tension, rapid heartbeat, or shortness of breath.
  • Avoidance of certain situations or activities to prevent anxious feelings.
  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or feeling present in the moment.

Anxiety can stem from various sources, including past experiences, ongoing stress, or internal patterns that feel hard to change. Regardless of its origin, anxiety can feel isolating—but with the right support, relief is possible.

“For the first time in years, my mind is calm.”
    — Azman

I’m in my forties now, and I’ve spent most of my adult life feeling like I was running on empty. On the outside, things looked fine—I’ve got a steady job, a loving family—but inside, it was a constant storm. Worry after worry, never-ending what-ifs, and a tightness in my chest that never really went away.

In my culture, we don’t really talk much about mental health. You’re expected to just get on with it. But I knew I couldn’t keep living like this. I was struggling to sleep, losing patience with my kids, and just feeling constantly overwhelmed.

Eventually, I found Eleos Counselling online and started therapy with Tony. I didn’t know what to expect. I was nervous at first. But Tony had this gentle, grounded way of helping me open up. Slowly, we worked through the layers—my habits of overthinking, my fear of letting people down, and how much pressure I was putting on myself without realising.

Therapy gave me tools, yes—but more than that, it gave me understanding. And dignity. I learned how to respond to anxiety instead of reacting to it.

I used to feel ashamed for not being able to “handle it.” Now I know that asking for help was one of the bravest things I’ve done. And I’m deeply thankful I did.
